As early as the 9th century, gunpowder was discovered, and this led to the displacement of primitive weapons such as bows and arrows. The 18th century saw the emergence of submarines which revolutionized naval warfare by introducing underwater vessels capable of sinking warships. In more recent times, the increased utilization of unmanned systems has revolutionized military operations. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are used in situations where manned flight is considered too risky or difficult, and they provide troops with updates through constant surveillance and transmission of real-time imagery of activities on the ground. Remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) have also been developed to assist in mine clearing, anti-submarine warfare, and area protection. a. Describe the evolution of military equipment brought about by advances in technologies. b. Comment on the benefits of using unmanned systems in warfare. c. Identify and demonstrate potential ethical issues arising from the use of unmanned systems in warfare. d. Explain and discuss other applications of unmanned systems that are beneficial to mankind.
