Empathetic listening is a crucial life skill, especially when one is dealing with a person
who may be in an emotionally-troubling situation. The basics of empathetic reasoning include
showing compassion, emotional identification, insight, and feeling in the listener. For one to
portray empathetic listening, they have to give the speaker the time to explain their problems and
then react accordingly by bearing the burdens of the speaker as well. Although the listener may
not be exactly in a position to feel what the speaker is feeling, they need to get as close as
possible and allow themselves to be immersed in the world of the speaker. Empathy in listening
is a way of showing concern for the speaker and their worries and providing a shoulder to lean
on by engaging them in the discussion that they need to alleviate their problems.
My listening skills are somewhere close to empathetic, but I have not reached there yet.
