ANALYZING ‘THE THINGS THEY CARRIED’ BY O’BRIEN
There is a need to understand that the story ‘The Things They Carried’ has been termed as
‘metafiction’ which means that it is not non-fiction and neither is it quite fiction. It is imperative
that one seeks to view the narration as one that is trying to analyze various fears of individuals,
in a world of uncertainty. It is a way that focuses on how the soldiers, who are used figuratively,
to show the daily struggles that all human beings face and the ways of escape that they use. The
profession of being in the disciplined forces means that one is called to be of service to their
country, and putting the interests of their country above their personal needs. The life of a soldier
can means that the soldiers can find themselves in combat areas in foreign countries and have to
embrace a new life. Of course, when they come back to their native countries, they also have to
adapt to a new life. Some have to even confront the impact of the war, such as being crippled and
even the loss of their loved ones, and the lives they had before the war. In the story ‘The Things
They Carried’, the writer tries to show the struggle of the soldiers while in the war zones, and
some of the methods that they use to maintain sanity, to escape the harsh conditions of the war
and the survival tactics that they deploy. In the story, it shows the life of soldiers during the
Vietnam War, their struggles and how they try to keep going when confronted with the
unavoidable consequences of war.
