You are working in a rehab center for teenagers who tell you that drugs get them through the day because school is boring, their families are dysfunctional, and that they use them because their friends pressure them. Some tell you that their parents, aunts, and uncles gave them their first exposure to marijuana, cocaine, and meth. Others say they just like how some drugs calm them down and others speed them up.

Reasons why people begin to use mood-altering substances
Substance abuse is a major problem that causes pain and suffering to those abusing them,
those around them and the society at large. Despite the many attempts that have been carried out
to educate the society on substance abuse, eradicating this menace has been a problem for a long
time. This is because the reasons why individuals use mood-altering substances such as alcohol
and inhalants has not been exploited successfully. Some of the reasons include;
Peer pressure
Teenagers are usually faced with pressure to fit in with the society and especially their
peers. When their friends use alcohol, nicotine or pot to feel good, they feel coerced to engage in
the fun (Brooks, 2015). People who are not emotionally strong do not withstand the pressure, and
with time they give in to the persuasion from their friends. This kind of pressure can cause
someone to try out things they wouldn't have done on their own.
To relieve stress
This modern world has strained and stresses that most people find hard to deal with. They
may be undergoing the loss of a loved one, work stress, financial crisis or family dysfunctions
that might be taking a tool on them. As a way to calm down the storm raging them in mind, these
individuals look for relaxants such as alcohol or inhala...
