Introduction
The primary America’s belief about religion and personal freedom is that an individual
has all the rights of practicing their own religion. In the United States, there is a broad range of
ethnic backgrounds and this leads to religious pluralism since many religions are being practiced
in America. In this connected a study has disclosed that about 93 percent of all Americans claim
that they believe in a higher power; God and only seven percent pointed out that they never
believe in religion (Olesen & Madsen, 2010). Most of the Americans are Christians but all in all,
all religions always play a significant portion in promoting the American culture. Catholic faith
was introduced first in America by Spanish missionaries. The main factor that attracted many
colonial settlers to America was the fact that there was a desire for religious freedom. America as
a nation has created a large group of Protestants since before the coming of the missionaries
there was no any defined national religion in America (Olesen & Madsen, 2010). These
Protestants often share a common heritage that helps in shaping the beliefs and values of
Americans. Americans Protestantism values and emphasizes the process of self-improvement. In
this way protestants belief and always advocate for natural sinfulness of human nature. Similarly,
Americans often purchase a broad range of self-help books for them attain self-improvement.
Additionally, Americans are always determined to attend abroad range of group support groups
and self-help seminars which in the long run assists them to stop drinking or smoking, develop
self-confidence, have healthier relationships, support volunteerism as well as developing
humanitarianism (Olesen & Madsen, 2010). This essay aims at discussing about American
Religion Heritage from a broader perspective of both Volunteerism and Humanitarianism.

Volunteerism and Humanitarianism have been regarded as most of the significant
activities that promotes humanism. Volunteerism and humanitarianism is a term that generally
stands for a process that an individual must be involved in to make themselves a better person
may be through contribution of their money to charitable, their time, religion as well as their
education for the help of other people in the community (Brundy, 2014). The Fair Labor
Standards Act defines a volunteer as a person who carries out activities or services for a public
agency, for a needy person, for humanitarian reasons or for charity purposes without
expectations, receipt or promise for future compensation or pay for the services offered.
Moreover, several studies have disclosed that there is a significant connection between
religiousness, volunteering and humanitarianism (Brundy, 2014). Studies have found that
religiousness is apparently becoming more private, individual and separate from the church. This
has created more individualized believers and has led to the rise of new, different ways of
believing and acting which are far much separated from the church. In most cases, religion has
been perceived as the driving force to volunteering, humanitarianism, non-compulsory and
unpaid work for other people in the societies. A study conducted by (Cnaan et al, 2009) discloses
that some of the traditional religious activities like being an active member of church and going
to church regularly is directly linked to volunteering and humanitarianism. Additionally, this
study indicates that private religiousness is directly connected to good deeds of volunteerism and
