The Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry
After World War II had ended in 1945 spring, Harry Truman, the former U.S president,
sent Earl Harrison, a special envoy to Europe to report on the treatment and state of the
displaced persons by the U.S troops. The report by Harrison gave particular attention to the
Jewish holocaust survivors among the displaced persons. It stated that they appeared to be
treating the Jewish just like the Nazi, with an exception that they were not being exterminated.
To improve the situation of the Jewish DPs, Harrison gave a recommendation that segregated
them and providing a guarantee favoring their status. The most significant proposal was that
which stated that there should be a vacation of 100000 Jewish DPs from the camps and give
them admission to Palestine (Waldman, 2015). Therefore, a linkage was created between the
European Jews plight and Palestine future. After that, the call for entry of these 100000 Jews to
Palestine became an official policy of America, marking the start of active involvement of
America in the conflict over Palestine.
The government of Britain did not accept the demands of America, with the fear of
violent Arab resistance to Jewish DPs in-flux into Palestine. Instead, Britain gave an offer to
Washington to come up with the Anglo-American committee of inquiry (AAC) that would
provide a solution to the conflict between the Arabs and Jewish in Palestine as well as the
European Jewish refugees who were filling the European DP camps. The British foreign
secretary at the time, Ernest Bevin, was committed to the application of any solution that could
be suggested by the committee, even when it meant the Washington joining forces with the
