Introduction
Persepolis is a two-volume autobiography of the Iranian-French graphic novelist
Marjane Satrapi. The first volume called Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood explores the
author’s childhood and ends when she is sent out of Iran to study in Europe. The second
book, Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return, deals with her time in Iran later on as an adult. It is
an unusual autobiography presented in the graphic novel form. Though presented in simple
black and white drawings, it examines a range of important themes such as religion,
repression, politics, class systems, and revolution among many others. Satrapi’s experiences
are highly intertwined with the country’s social and political upheaval. In Persepolis, Iranian
identity serves as a dominant moral guide and European identity as the alternative one, and
identity is a multi-faceted thing that cannot be described only with regards to nations and
religions.

Some critics and observers, especially from the West, have regarded Satrapi’s notion
of identity in her book as limited to personal identity because she describes her teenage years
