Carboxylic acids are identified by carbonyl group that is attached to hydroxyl group. The
combination of the carbonyl carbon and hydroxyl group gives the compound an acidic
characteristic. The carboxylic acids are weak in nature and they partially ionize in water. The
dissociation constant of carboxylic acids is less than 10-5. The size of R group determines the
solubility of these acids in water. The acid reacts with bases that are stronger than water, for
