Introduction
Imperialism is a term that refers to the policy of acquiring as well as holding colonies.
This means that a nation through imperialism is in the position to extend its rule or authority over
foreign countries. Between 1880 and 1914, European imperialist felt that it was proper for them
to grow their empires especially into Africa and Asia in what came to be known as the new
imperialism. The European imperialists at this time had concrete reasons for the need of
imperialism. In this paper, we shall talk about how European imperialists justified their
imperialism between 1880 and 1914.
European Imperialism between 1880 and 1914
Before the 19th century, Europe’s relation with other foreign nations was mostly to the
extent of holding trading posts on these foreign countries. This means that Europe was focused
on making money from these nations and usually did not enforce a direct rule. However, as time
went by in the 19th century, European imperialists saw it fit to have a change of things and hence
sought political power over the other foreign nations. They had some ways in which they
justified their imperialism.
European nations argued that new imperialism was necessary for economic growth.
Imperialism was of great importance to growing their markets worldwide as this would allow
them to sell commodities that were difficult to sell domestically. European industrialized nations
had business people and bankers who possessed a large pool of capital for investment on which
they thought that investing in foreign countries would be more advantageous. There was an
