Positive Influence on Drug Use, Abuse and Addiction
The use, abuse, and addiction to the drug are heavily correlated to the age of the victim.
Age forms an essential factor in the decision-making process which provided for and allows
critical thinking. One’s mental status is a factor heavily influenced by an individual age as
intelligence correlates with experience. A person's experiences will define the choices they make
when faced with the choice of drug use (Ketcham & Pace, 2003). This is because such an
experience confers one the intelligence and knowledge to know what is healthy or unhealthy for
them. The younger a person is, the low the experience they have had in life. An adult is better
placed to make the right choices when faced with a drug problem as compared to a youth. Age
determines a person’s intellectual capability to review a situation and make the right choice
critically; not based on their current situation but their previous experiences.
Age is, therefore, a definitive factor in influencing life choices when it comes to drug use,
abuse, or addiction. An older person, due to their experience and responsibility, will choose not
to use a drug as it is economically draining and a health risk (Palmer & Kunreuther, 2017). A
younger person will not take into consideration the fact that the use of drugs may affect their
health or even make them lose their jobs. They will engage in the reckless and dangerous
behavior, solely based on their immediate wants and needs, with little or no care as to what the
consequences might be. Therefore, age is a positive factor in influencing the choices people
make, especially in deciding whether to abuse drugs or not.
