Running head: RESEARCH PAPER
Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in the US, with smoking being the
key cause of the diseases. Since the mid-20th century, scientists, the government, as well as
other stakeholders have attempted to come up with viable solutions in addressing nicotine
addiction, which is the key reason why majority of smokers have been unable to quit despite
understanding the possible risks and consequences they are exposed to. Inventors have come
up with various inventions including e-cigarettes also known as vaping, while others have
invested majorly on nicotine patches and gums which are meant to supply an individual with
a minimum level of safe nicotine during the withdrawal process.
Despite these inventions, a high number of smokers have been unable to quit, with
majority only quitting for a short period of time, after which they relapse. This has created a
need to come up with a more sustainable invention which would address the specific needs of
individuals who are highly dependent on smoking, and who vaping and nicotine patches have
been unable to work on them. One of the most viable inventions is the introduction of a
‘Smoke Less’ app, meant to specifically target long period smokers who have been
attempting to quit smoking for years, but have been unable to stop due to the inability to deal
with the withdrawal symptoms. The proposed app is meant to regulate nicotine intake, by
tracking the number of cigarettes smoked by an individual each day, as well as their nicotine
content. Alongside tracking these quantities, the app can also track one’s health, as well as
the recommended levels of nicotine. The targeted shark tank panel for this app will be leading
technology companies such as Google and Apple which have been showing a lot of interest
in healthcare and wellbeing apps. Due to the expected complexity of the app, the estimated
cost will be $1 million.
Scientists have established a strong link between smoking and lung cancer, as a result
of an addiction caused by Nicotine, which is found in tobacco. This addictive chemical
triggers the brain and makes it hard to quit smoking. Tar, which is a residual left behind a
smoker’s lungs due to incomplete burning of chemicals, inflicts biological and physical
damage to one’s lungs and causing lung cancer. Therefore, as was put by Michael Russell in
his tobacco harm reduction theory, ‘people smoke for the nicotine, but die from the tar’. The
tar in tobacco as well as other gases released as one smokes leads to lung cancer and other
chronic diseases (WHO, 2011). Due to these effects, various stakeholders including the
government, its agents, Tobacco companies, and the public have come up with various
strategies of ensuring that smokers quit due to more regulations or by offering them
alternatives to smoking. However, these efforts have not been very successful since majority
of smokers are unable to quit due to the severe withdrawal symptoms, hence the need to
invent an app which unlike the current ones, cam help smokers regulate their nicotine intake,
especially the ones who have attempted to quit but their efforts have been fruitless.

The Silicon Valley giants such as Amazon, Apple, and Google are some of the biggest
and famous brands in America which are currently making huge bets on healthcare.
Currently, big companies such as Apple are planning a line of medical clinics while Uber is
also looking into ambulances. Therefore, they would make good potential candidates of
reaching out with this idea. Currently these big techs companies are making huge strides, and
their ability to join in the nicotine consumption levels can help reach out to a wider audience.
Companies such as Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft have built medical monitoring devices
and therefore, are likely to be interested in this invention. Since these companies are already
showing interest in fitness, they are more likely to show interest in...
