Description

Compare and contrast cat. 6 unshielded twisted pair (UTP), coaxial, and single mode fiber optic cabling types.

Describe one or two of the advantages and/or disadvantages associated with using each cable type for a business’s network infrastructure.

Consider the (a) cost per foot or meter; (b) termination/installation cost; (c) bandwidth; (d) cable length/transmission distance; (e) end point devices (i.e., workstation, wireless access point, switch, router, server, SAN, etc.); (f) use – in-building horizontal or vertical; and (g) conversion or interface equipment. Be sure to support your information with the appropriate citation(s).

The paper must use APA 6th ed., 7th printing formatting and contain a title page, 3 to 5 pages of content, and a minimum of three peer-reviewed references.

DATA COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING

2

Compare and contrast cat. 6 unshielded twisted pair (UTP), coaxial, and single mode fiber
optic cabling types.
Introduction
First, data communications as well as networking utilize wires and cables for the purpose
of connecting both sending and receiving devices (Robertazzi, 2017). The common cable types
used in data communications include the CAT 6 unshielded twisted pair (UTP), coaxial and
single mode fiber optic cabling types. All of these cables are equally applied in data
communications and networking. However, they are different and suitable for different
applications.
CAT 6 Unshielded Twisted Pair
CAT 6 Unshielded Twisted Pair is commonly utilized in the support of Ethernet, which is
based on local area networks. It comprises of four tightly wound twisted pair of copper wires that
are not shielded by any metallic shields. The twisted wires are color coded to ease the
identification of the pairs. The wires that match have similar colors with one wire having a solid
color and the other with striped with at least one color that matches its other pair. For instance, if
one wire in a pair is blue the other wire would have white and blue stripes to help ease the
matching (Ogundapo, Duffy & Nche, 2016).
Advantages
The wires are twisted around each other to allow for minimal electromagnetic
interference within the individual pairs and the pairs are also twisted around each other. This is
done in order to reduce the amount of cross talk and electromagnetic interference. Besides, CAT
6 UTP is a high performance cable that offers universal connectivity for high-speed network.

The conductor diameter is thicker. This enhances reliability of the cable and increase data rates.
The transmission in the cable is characterized by higher signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, it is
easy to install due to the easy-to-pull box where it is packaged. CAT 6 UTP aids orga...
