The Force That Redefines Gender Role
Premiered in 2015 and directed by Abrams J, the “Star Awakens: Episode VII – The
Force Awakens” is set thirty years after the return of the Jedi. It highlights the Resistance’s
search for Luke Skywalker who goes missing set by the female scavenger known as Rey who
join hands with Finn Stormtrooper and other characters in the quest. In the social context, the
episode has changed the idea of movies having most of their characters as men to making its
protagonists a woman. It highlights the potential and significance of both genders especially
women in doing more than the expectation of the society. The movie utilizes the characters
including Rey, Ren, Leia, and Finn to present the idea that the gender roles can get
redefined from the common established societal beliefs, expectations, standards, and
perspectives on both genders.
Rey is a female scavenger who redefines the role of women in the film as she can take
care of herself in the planet, Jakku and also have extraordinary skills. It contradicts the ordinary
societal belief that women remain subordinately under the care of men and their place is taking
care of the home and hence cannot succeed in the public sphere. She is left behind by her family
who she desires so much and waits for their return despite the fact that “they are never coming
back.” Jakku is a harsh planet where one has to struggle to survive. Rey lives on a junk pile of
this deserted planet and spends most of her time picking electronic garbage and sells whatever

she could find to meet her needs. Even with the situation, the universe has a lot in store for her.
She believes that someone will come for her and eventually when that someone comes, it does
not meet her expectations, but she has to give in to fate. During her daily routines, she gains
skills of pulling the metal bulks and has figured out how to fly the ships. Not only that, she has
knowledge of how they operate and proved that to Han Solo. Therefore, Rey is a female
protagonist who redefined gender roles by proving that women can also take care of themselves
and gain skills to apply in the public domain just like the men.
Moreover, apart from being tough and powerful, Rey also has a compassionate heart,
qualities that will make her fit with the rest of the gangs of the star war. Living in Jakku is no
joke, and some individuals have had a hard time surviving without getting involved in malicious
activities and bad vices. Rey has decided to face the life toughly and even in that situation of the
struggle to survive, she is still compassionate to others, and she tells BB-8 “don’t follow me; the
town is that way. No! in the morning you go.” Moreover, she is not aware she is a Force genius
until she finds lightsaber of Skywalker stuck in the basement. Her destiny calls and she try to
fight and resist it because she feels she has a responsibility in the planet Jakku and claims “I
don’t want any part of this.” Her stubbornness not only makes her realize her capabilities but
also the discovery of her self-worth. She gets convinced that Jakku isn’t for her and better things
await her. Therefore, the galaxy has to watch out for this female protagonist who has admirable
traits and has just realized she is more than the little garbage girl but a skillful woman who can
apply them to help find Skywalker.
Finn portrays less masculinity as he is fearful, emotional, and powerless. In most cases,
men get portrayed as strong and brave individuals who are not overcome by emotions (Tmscontributors, 2016). When we first meet him, he is stormtrooper who plans to destroy an

innocent village in his quest for the map. He is fearful, and self-interest primarily drives his
actions. Fear is his primary motivation and becomes unable to identify who he is looking out for
straightly. He fears that the First Order and claims that “You don’t know the First Order as I do.
They will slaughter us. We all need to run.” Notably, Finn has to conquer the fear if he wants to
continue with the program. He is even unable to prevent or save Rey from getting abducted and
instead laments that they have taken her and, according to him, he has let down and disappointed
her best friend. The fear makes him feel that he needs to leave the stormtroopers and become a
rebel but still feels he must save her friend. Poe helps him realize the significance of Rey in
sealing the fate of the galaxy and the reason why it remains essential for Finn to save her. Even
though frightened, his emotional attachment with her as a friend makes him go after Rey, and
even save her in the hands of Ren. Therefore, only friendship makes Finn realize his capabilities
and the need to overcome his fears to become what is expected of him as a man.
Well if feminism is concerned about organizing activities on behalf of the rights and
interest of women, then this episode of the film captures the idea that women can be part of
something big too. For example, the episode goes ahead to make one of the stormtroopers a
woman while the previous ones consisted of all men. Apart from Rey, Leia is admired for being
emotionally strong and an exemplified leader who is no longer a damsel in distress, but brave
and daring. Women are attributed to being emotional and would always fear to hold the political
post, and Leila is one character who prove this notion wrong. At first, she is a princess, a
senator, and becomes a governor in the world predominated and ruled by men. Leia has lost her
son and husband and also the First Order after fighting so hard to destroy the Empire. As a
woman, in most instances, it is expected that the emotional str...
