Introduction
o Searching for a psychology article in the Public Library of Science (PLOS One)
helped me find a study that was carried out by Ferrari et al. (2018). The title of the
study is Psychological Advocacy Towards Healing (PATH): A Randomized
Controlled Trial of a Psychological Intervention in a Domestic Violence Service
Setting. The research was conducted by Giulia Ferrari, Gene Feder, Roxane
Agnew-Davies, Jayne E. Bailey, Sandra Hollinghurst, Louise Howard, Emma
Howarth, Lynnmarie Sardinha, Debbie Sharp, Tim J. Peters. It was then published
by PLOS One on November 27, 2018.
o The major aim of the research was to assess the effectiveness of an eight-session
specialist psychological advocacy (SPA) intervention in comparison to normal
DVA advocacy. The study focused on women aged 16 years and older accessing
DVA services in two UK cities. The study received approval from the South West
4 (Southmead) Research Ethics Committee as a strategy for adhering to the
requirements of the National Research Ethics.
o The study design that was used by the researchers was an open-pragmatic,
randomized, controlled design in real-world settings. The methodology involved
two parallel groups. Group allocation information was securely maintained in a
randomization database separate from the analysis database, with access limited
to the trial data manager.
o The primary outcomes measured at 12 months included depression symptoms
(PHQ-9) and psychological distress (CORE-OM). The secondary outcome of the
study was assessed using a general anxiety disorder questionnaire, short form-12
for quality-of-life measures and PTSD Symptom Scale.
