Emerging Topics in IT for Competitive Advantage
Introduction
Modern organizations have learned that it is almost impossible to remain relevant in the
business environment without embracing information technology to enhance their
competitiveness. Globalization has made business highly competitive, and the pressure to come
up with innovative strategies is inevitable. Since international standards and consumer
expectations are proliferating, firms have realized that the only way that they can succeed is by
strategically orienting their operations toward the innovative use of information technology.
According to Berisha-Shaqiri (2015), firms can use information technology to widen their scope
of customers, develop new products efficiently, and foster stronger relationships within their
business networks. The perfect utilization of the latest technologies paves the way for the
reduction of costs and enhancement of productivity. Doğan (2016) contends that in addition to
enhancing competitiveness, IT can support the creation of new business pathways that, in turn,
can give organizations the advantage of reduced competition. Without a doubt, some of the most
critical trends and issues information technology for competitive advantage are big data
analytics, cloud computing, CRM and inventory management, virtual workspaces, social media
management, and 3D printing.
Analysis of IT for Competitiveness
There have been many innovations in the use of information technology to enhance
competitiveness. Whenever technology develops at a rapid rate, some of the firms may embrace
most of its useful aspects immediately while others may take quite a while before being able to
cope with the new ways of doing things. Many trends, issues, and innovations have arisen in the
field of information technology, and their impact has been overwhelming.

Big Data Analytics (BDA) and Competitive Advantage
According to Wamba, Gunasekaran, Akter, Ren, Dubey, & Childe (2017), almost every
firm that is keen on enhancing business efficiency and effectiveness has embraced business data
analytics. Germann, Lilien, Fiedler, & Kraus, 2014) point out that one essential element of BDA
is in the area of customer analytics, where the technology has triggered substantial improvements
in firm performance. Fundamental decision-making processes are increasingly informed by
analytics and organizations can establish the exact approaches that can bring about positive
changes to their performance. An example of a firm that uses big data analytics to remain
competitive is Target Corporation. Wamba, Gunasekaran, Akter, Ren, Dubey, & Childe (2017)
contend that the company predicts future purchasing tendencies of customers through tracking
their past buying behaviors via the loyalty cards. Online retail firms such as Alibaba and Amazon
also use BDA to tailor recommendations to their clients based on such parameters as browsing
and purchasing history. Healthcare centers rely on BDA in the reduction of operating costs,
streamlining of core activities, and betterment of the quality of life. All these activities have one
primary advantage to the firms- they persuade the customers to maintain a long-term relationship
by always keeping them engaged by suggesting items and services that may be of their interest.
The resultant effect is enhanced competitiveness on the global landscape.
However, Akter, Wamba, Gunasekaran, Dubey, & Childe (2016) point out that not all
firms can use big data analytics profitably. They go on and recommend the alignment of
technology, management, and talent capacity to ensure that the technology is utilized through the
most befitting approaches possible, thus enhancing efficiency and effectiveness. It is worth
heeding that mapping out a practical plan on how big data technology will be used is a daunting
task. Firms must set a clear approach to what specific tools, techniques, and data sets to use. The
