SAFETY IN PETROLEUM ENGINEERING
1. Introduction
Petroleum engineering is a field of engineering that deals with the activities that major on
producing hydrocarbons in the form of crude oil and gases that are natural. Safety in petroleum
engineering deals with legislation related to safety, techniques of identifying hazards related to
the activities, methods of assessing risks related to chemical health, and concepts of safety
design. In addition, safety in petroleum engineering covers the health and environmental issues
important in ensuring that people engaged in the activities enjoy physical and mental welfare.
2. Methods of Identifying Hazards in Petroleum Engineering
Hazard identification is the process of looking for potential hazards in a workplace with
the aim of understanding the hazards involved and how to manage them. Identifying hazards is
important in ensuring that people working in petroleum industries are safe. Hazards in petroleum
engineering can be divided into various groups (Chauhan, 2013). Physical hazards that include
noise, heat, cold, and electricity are some of the hazards available in petroleum engineering.
Secondly, the chemical hazard is another type of hazard encountered by workers in the
petroleum industry. Some of the chemical hazards include; corrosive liquids, toxic gases, and
fumes that are noxious. In addition, petroleum engineering is involved in radiation hazards that
include radioactive materials and machines that use x-ray radiations. In addition, ergonomic
hazards that relate to the tools and equipment used when carrying out petroleum engineering
activities are other types of hazards. Others hazards include biological, infectious bacteria and
virus, and psychological hazards such as stress that result from overwork and faulty equipment
that have risk of injury.

When identifying hazards, there is need to consider the people who are exposed to
hazards, and the impact it may have on victims after exposure. Gathering information on
identifying hazards assist in managing the hazard and assessing risks that help in ensuring there
is safety among the workers. When identifying hazards, there are factors in people that should be
considered before management of hazard commences (Firesmith, 2004). The main and important
factor to consider when looking for any potential hazard is any special characteristic such as
susceptibility of workers to chemicals and ergonomic issues of the hazard. In addition,
evaluating how workers in petroleum industries are affected by circumstances related to
activities is another important factor.
A number of methods are used to identify hazards in areas where petroleum-engineering
activities take place to ensure that the hazards are managed, and safety of the workers is upheld.
Doing a workplace walkthrough is one of the methods that are used in petroleum industries that
deal in the production of hydrocarbons in identifying the potential hazard...
