1Being a large pharmaceutical company, ranked fifth in the world, AstraZeneca had
operations in 140 nations by 2009. As such, the operations in different countries were executed
by different expatriates. In a bid to deliver on its international business mandate, the company
sought to ensure that all its expatriates on international assignments were always operating in
comfortable and accommodative environments to ensure that their levels of motivation and
productivity remained high. Therefore, it is imperative to note that the company was faced with
the need to offer sufficient accommodation for the expatriates to ensure their comfort in the
different countries (Deresky, 2013). Upon hiring an expat, the company ensured that they were
linked to an International Assignment manager, who, in turn, ensured that the experts were taken
through training sessions to acquaint them with the different languages in their new surroundings
