Description
This integrated assignment encompasses two key components. Firstly, students will independently select and explore a specific cultural aspect (e.g., ethnicity, language, religion) to analyze its impact on individuals with disabilities. The resulting Cultural Impacts Paper will delve into historical context, cultural norms, and the nuanced intersection of culture and disability, aiming to deepen the understanding of diverse experiences within the disability community. Building upon these insights, students will subsequently develop an individual Assessment and Intervention Proposal for a hypothetical case study involving an individual with a disability. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from the course, this proposal demands a comprehensive understanding of how cultural, social, and clinical factors intricately influence the design of effective interventions. Through this integrated assignment, students will bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications in the realm of disability studies.

Introduction
Individuals with disabilities are among the most vulnerable members of society. They are
forced to navigate a world that is shaped and influenced by various cultural factors, including
religion, language, and ethnicity (Riddell & Watson, 2014). The interplay between these cultural
aspects substantially affects how such individuals are perceived, treated, and included in society
(Riddell & Watson, 2014). For instance, cultural traditions, practices, and expectations affect
how disabilities are perceived and how those with disabilities are treated within specific ethnic
communities. Similarly, the linguistic landscape individuals with disabilities find themselves in
can either serve as a barrier or bridge for their treatment and inclusion in society (Riddell &
Watson, 2014). Although ethnicity and language shape the experiences of individuals with
disabilities, this paper will predominantly focus on religion and disability. Religious practices,
beliefs, and values significantly contribute to and shape the experiences of individuals with
disabilities (Michail, 2015). Some religious traditions might perceive disability as a divine
punishment or providing opportunities for spiritual growth and development (Michail, 2015).
Understanding the historical context, cultural norms, and the intersection between religion and
disability is vital for addressing today’s challenges as well as capitalizing on opportunities to
guarantee the full participation of those with disabilities in society, irrespective of their religious
traditions.
Background Information: Disability
Understanding what disability is and the various models advanced to better comprehend
it will provide valuable background information that will support the analysis and exploration
provided in subsequent sections of the paper. Disability is an umbrella term representing
impairments, activity limitations, as well as participation restrictions (Michail, 2015). It also

encompasses the adverse interaction aspects between individuals with health conditions and their
contextual factors (individual and environmental factors) (Michail, 2015). Various international,
regional, and national human rights instruments have been adopted to protect the rights of
individuals with disabilities and guarantee their full participation in all aspects of society,
including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Michail, 2015).
However, this is not always the case, considering they still deal with discrimination, inequality,
and prejudice. Religious practices, values, and beliefs are among the major root causes of these
adverse experiences, as theological interpretations of disability have historically shaped and
continue to shape how society relates to and interacts with individuals with disabilities (Michail,
2015...
