Law enforcement has established various procedures that guide the entire process of
crime scene evaluation. Typically, on arrival at a crime scene, investigators begin their work
by securing the area by various means like the use of the yellow tape. This is done to ensure
the safety of any evidence that may be available at the scene that can be of use in subsequent
stages of catching the perpetrators and knowing what exactly happened. Securing a crime
scene involve erecting physical barriers around it to prevent members of the public from
interfering with useful evidence (Saferstein, 2013). Sometimes some evidence might be
found outside this protected area hence areas surrounding the crime scene might have to be
scanned keenly.
Once a physical barrier is set up the next step is to survey the area. Investigators walk
through the area to establish the route used by the perpetrator(s) in and out of the crime scene
and to find any clues and evidence that enable them to know the kind of crime and any leads
