History & Background
Shonda Rhimes was born in Chicago on 13th January 1970 and she is the last born in a
family with six siblings. She was born to a university administrator of a father and a college
professor of a mother who took up two doctorates after her children growing up. Her early
attraction to storytelling while younger was the inspiration behind her taking up the
responsibilities of a playwright. As a hospital volunteer, her work in hospital films grew. About
her educational background, her bachelor's degree in Dartmouth College was in film studies and
English which she got in 1991. She performed, directed and even wrote fictional material. The
Black Underground Theater Association aided in her performances and directing. She wrote for
the newspaper while in college. Advertising work followed after completion of her life in
college. Her studies in screenwriting were later stretched out in the University of Southern
California. She managed to earn herself the Gary Rosenberg Writing Fellowship after turning out
to be the top student in her class. USC School of Cinematic Arts helped with her Master's Degree
in Fine Arts. She interned with Debra Martin Chase who was her mentor while at USC as well as
