Effects of the Westward Expansion
The Westward Expansion was the gradual acquisition of territory from the East Coast of
the United States and the expansion towards the West up to the Pacific Ocean. The Louisiana
Purchase in 1803 by Thomas Jefferson started the Westward expansion which would eventually
lead to the development of and settlement in the western territories. Since the expansion was the
basis for the formation of the nation’s states and territories, it involved the industrialization of
those areas including the railway lines and industries. The effects of the expansion to people who
settled in those lands and those who came, as a result, were different. Different stakeholders in
this expansion included the White settlers, Native American people, African Americans,
Hispanics, Chinese laborers, and the government.
The Westward expansion was mostly driven by the Manifest Destiny, the belief that
Americans were bound to occupy the land from the East Coast to the West Coast. The first act of
Westward expansion was mainly the Louisiana Purchase which was the purchase of the
