He was controversial because of his promotion of what he termed the “armed self-defense” of minority communities, particularly black communities in the American South in the post-WWII era, places like his hometown of Monroe, North Carolina. Your task in this assignment is to read Williams’ 1962 pamphlet, Negroes with Guns, including the Foreword and Introduction, and then write a 2-3 page essay that addresses the following questions. 1) After reading the Foreword and Introduction, explain who Robert F. Williams was. For example, what did he do with his life that makes him the subject of historians and other academics and political activists? What does he contribute to your understanding of American history? 2) After reading the main document by Williams himself, explain what you understand to be his position on “armed self-defense,” and on non-violent political activism. Robert Williams Contributions in American History
Robert Williams is one of the most profound people that left a lasting mark in the history
of American. He is famously known for his endeavors in subduing the effects of marginalization
within the Black community. For instance, he is remembered for protecting the two boys that
were abused by the anti-black movement called the Ku Klux clan and for even starting a gun
club to help defend the rights of black in specific areas. More so, Robert Williams is also notable
for his position in `armed self-defense` where racial tension was high. He dedicated his life
solely to protecting the rights of blacks and at one point; he went on political exile to save his
skin. Aside from Negros with guns, undertaking, Robert Williams is also well recognized for
producing various other notable literary pieces on the discrimination of the black community
(Purnell). For instance, one can learn that the marginalization of blacks is a social problem that
has affected the African American society for decades. Therefore, he has contributed so much in
reshaping of the American History in numerous ways (Williams).
Robert Williams position on Armed Self-defense and non-physical violence
Roberts’s proposition regarding Armed Self Defense entailed the aspect under which a
person is obliged to use arms for self-defense. As such he is the pioneer of the enactment of gun
laws still used in some states today. Robert argued by saying:
“The Afro-American militant is a 'militant' because he defends himself, his family, his
home, and his dignity. He does not introduce violence into a racist social system - the

violence is already there, and has always been there. It is precisely this unchallenged
violence that allows a racist social system to perpetuate itself. when people say that they
are opposed to Negros ‘resorting to violence’ what they really mean is that they are
opposed to Negroes defending themselves and challenging the exclusive monopoly of
violence by white racist"
Hence, according to Robert Williams, black must be allowed to save their lives at all cost, so
