CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORY AND PRACTICAL THEORY
Criminological theories explain why people commit crimes. Examples of these theories are
the rational choice theory, social disorganisation theory, strain theory, social learning theory,
social control theory and labelling theory (Johnson & Groff, 2014). From the above-listed
theories, the two that I find most applicable for reasons why people commit a crime is the social
learning and the strain theories.
The strain theory suggests that the society sets specific standards for the members of that
society to achieve (Johnson & Groff, 2014). Some individuals in the community lack the
opportunities and abilities to meet these expectations while others do have. When some
individuals fail to meet the set expectations, strain occurs, and these people end up being
