Biographical Overview
Frances Perkins was born on April 10th 1880. She was born as Fannie Coralie Perkins but
later changed her name to Frances Perkins. She spent most of her childhood in Worcester
Massachusetts (Miller, 2016). Frances Perkins loved her grandmother who had a strong influence
on her. This made the family make frequent visits to her grandmother. Perkins parents played a
crucial role in encouraging her work hard to achieve her goals. She was also introduced to the
Republican ideology, physical endurance, tenacity, self-reliance, and taught how to be
conservative. Perkins valued education, and her father took time to explain her classical literature
and Greek grammar. However, her mother did not grasp how remarkable Perkins was. The
support she had from her family allowed encouraged her to join high school. Even with the
support of her family, they wondered what future she would hold being an educated woman.
The high school had a very high percentage of males. During those times, women did not
concentrate more on education. Education was preferred for men than women. She managed to
finish high school and joined the college in the year 1898. She became curious about how society
worked and began having a sense of social justice. The founder of the college she attended had a
mission of preparing and encouraging girls to be involved in being teachers and doing
missionary work (Miller, 2016). Frances Perkins chose to major in chemistry and physics
through the American economic history caught her eye. After finishing her college education in
1902, she decided not to go home as that was the custom of many women. Rather, she set out to
New York on a mission to help the poor.
