Over the recent past, health disparity has become a global threat to the lives of people has
it is a common phenomenon. Carter-Pokras, (2002) defines health disparity as inequalities in
the provision and access to healthcare athwart a racial, socio-economic and ethnic groups.
Additionally, it can also be defined as population-related variances in the presence of illness,
health results and admission to healthcare. In America, health disparity is a common menace
to ethnic minorities especially the African Americans population commonly known as the
‘blacks’. For example, disease rates are much pronounced in the former as compared to the
later. The population of African Americans is estimated to be 46.8 million (14.5%) of the
United States of American total population according to the data of US Census Bureau data
of 2016. This implies that it is among the minority population in the US. Despite this
population having made greater strides like increasing in number in the middle class, getting
white collar jobs and increased enrolment in colleges they still remain lower compared to the
whites’ population.
Several studies have been carried out and they reveal African Americans are prone to
health disparity compared to the white population, for instance, cases of cancer are high in
the blacks unlike among the whites with a gap of 10%. Additionally, among the blacks, the
rate of asthma is approximately 28% higher than the whites and the rate of Systemic Lupus
Erythematosus among the females; it is three times greater among the African Americans
than whites. Further, on infectious diseases like Hepatitis C, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and
Syphilis are much reported from the blacks as compared to the whites. Furthermore, African
Americans population is highly prone to chronic kidney diseases, diabetes and cardiovascular
diseases which require the respective organ transplant yet there are a few organs available for
