In the wake of the earthquake which was experienced in Mexico in 2017, over 200 persons
with the inclusion of children lost their lives. A good number of people who lost their lives
were people who died in Mexico City. The earthquake left many rushing in search of shelter
and other in the search of survivors who were trapped underneath the buildings which had
collapsed following the natural disaster. The good number of schools which were affected by
the earthquake but only 15 of them had managed to suffer a lot of damage leading to the
death of some of children as well as the adults who worked at the institutions. Even though
there were many survivors who were found underneath the collapsed building, the disaster
management which was applied was inadequate.
The disaster management cycle will feature four phases which will ensure that the risks
following a disaster whether it’s a man-made disaster or a natural calamity are reduced and
will ensure that the loss of lives is limited. The first stage in the cycle will feature mitigation.
Mitigation will focus on the elimination of risks or the reduction in the effects which will be
experienced in a disaster which cannot be avoided. Some of the steps taken under this phase
will normally focus on the building codes since in most disasters, the buildings will not only
be affected but the crumpling of the structures will lead to the death of people.
Another focus under this phase will be public education on disaster management and
preventative healthcare. The effectiveness of this phase will rely on countermeasures which
have been taken, the information which has been made available to all on the hazards and the
emergency risks. Public policies will have to be modified to reduce the effects. One thing
evident from the case study involving Mexico and the earthquake which occurred in 2017 is
that this phase was not adequately implemented.

Evidence which show that this phase was inadequate would be the destruction which was left
behind following the natural calamity. Hundreds of people were injured during the
earthquake and the number of collapse buildings in Mexico City alone was 44. Reports
showed that the buildings were not only cracked but looked fragile enough to collapse to the
ground. Two municipalities were affected the most. Mexico City was more susceptible to the
effects of an earthquake because of where it was built on since the city was founded on a
ancient lakebed which had dried up years and ...
