Art Assignments
Over the semester you will have two creative art assignments paired with a one-page reflection
each. Reflections should be written in MLA format with Times New Roman 12 point double
spaced font, and submitted with an image of the activity These projects have nothing to do with
artistic skill! They are exercises in learning about principles of design and foundational elements
of color and line.
Project 1 – Josef Albers Color Theory – Due October 12th 11:59PM
In class we recently discussed color when we reviewed Prebles Chapter 3. We talked about Josef
Albers, whose color theory experiments became important to how we understand relationships
between hues. For this project, you will perform one of Albers’ experiments and reflect on the
experience.
? Visit the Albers Foundation Activities link here to watch the video
? Use the instructions in the video and follow along with the instructor to complete your
assignment
? In your reflection, discuss whether you saw two different colors when performing the
experiment, why you think that might be, and why this is an important thing to try to
learn about color.
? Please submit images of your color experiments (cellphone images are fine!) along with
your 1-page reflection
Project 2 – Sol Lewitt Line Drawings
Early on in the semester we talked about Sol Lewitt and his line drawings. Lewitt’s works all
stem from sets of instructions that he made. Many of his pieces have been completed by people
other than himself, and his works are reproducible even today after his death. His instructions are
often open to interpretation depending on the person executing them. For this activity, you will
use his instructions to create your own line drawing, and you will reflect with a classmate on
how yours compares and contrasts to theirs.
? Make a drawing by following the instructions below.
o 1. Find a piece of paper and a writing utensil (or multiple, be creative if you
want!)
o 2. Draw 24 tiny circles anywhere on a piece of paper.
o 3. Connect 12 of the circles with straight lines.
o 4. Connect 12 of the circles with wavy lines.
? After completion, meet with a classmate and compare drawings
? In your reflection, discuss the differences between your drawings
o Please include the name of the classmate so that I can compare drawings and see

Josef Albers Color Theory Reflection
Thinking back to my experience with Albers' tests, I saw two distinct colors at the time of
the experiment. Several aspects are intrinsic in how colors combine to explain this perceptual
phenomenon. Simultaneous contrast, in which nearby hues affect how one perceives a particular
color, is one crucial component. The brown squa...
