"Mars is Heaven" and "Adam and No Eve" may seem like fun science fiction to people
who are just looking for something to read, but if you look deeper, you'll find that the authors
were sending serious political messages about people's ability to do good and bad, which are
directly related to the dangerous times they wrote these stories. It's much more enjoyable to read
these complex short stories when you think about and understand the ideas.
"Mars is Heaven," which came out in 1948 as the Cold War was getting worse, is a story
about Martians changing their scenery to make it look like they're ready to welcome humans, but
in the end they destroy them. This is like how Communist forces in Korea pretended to be
friendly while secretly fighting capitalist U.S. troops who were involved in the Korean War. The
story shows how dangerous it is to think too little of people who disagree with you. The author
wants to warn the U.S. government not to be too sure of its ability to fight communism. The
audience is made up of U.S. politicians and people who support getting involved in other
countries' affairs.
