Description
Although the EHR improves clinical documentation and consistency, some clinicians observe that their time to document patient encounters increases rather than decreases. Having readily accessible mobile devices such as tablet computers, mobile carts, bedside terminals and even smartphones can be one way to provide less interruption to nurse and physician workflow at bedside.
Below are two healthcare scenarios that describe the use of mobile devices.

First Scenario “Laptop Convenience”: There is a trial for the deployment of laptops to the
nursing staff at LiveWell Hospital. The staff on 3 East are very pleased with the new laptops provided
to them for documentation in the e HR. Previously, the staff recorded little notes on paper and
returned to the main nursing station to use the desktop computers there to enter patient
documentation. Medical Assistant completed morning rounds on 5 patients at a time, noted each
patient’s vitals on notepads that fit into their pockets, then headed to nursing station to document in
the e HR. When complete, they returned to see the next 5 patients assigned to them and repeated the
process.
Now, each Medical Assistant has a laptop that they carry with them to each room. They sit on the
corner of the patient bed, open the laptop, log-in and record the patient’s vitals. This is a great time
saver.
