Legalizing human trafficking
According to the United Nations, human trafficking is the recruitment, transfer or transportation,
on an individual through means such as duress, coercion, fraud or abduction for improper
purposes ("Human Trafficking | National Institute of Justice," 2018). Most of the human
trafficking rings harbor people because of sexual exploitation or forced labor. This is a modern
version of slave trade where human rights are violated, and it has disastrous effects such as the
breaking down of families and communities, it deprives a country of its human capital, it fuels
organized crime, it undermines public health and creates opportunities for extortion among
government officials. The bottom line is human trafficking is illegal, though legalizing it would
go a long way in reducing many of this disadvantages. This paper argues that legalizing human
trafficking should lead to less adverse effects.
Human trafficking is a severe health problem. Before leaving a country, one has to be given
shots of vaccines to make sure they do not get any harmful diseases that are usually common in a
particular region or area. Also in most airports, one cannot travel without a clean bill of health or
prognosis of an ailment that is not contagious. Human trafficking does not follow this rules.
Hence contagious viral infections can be spread across continents by these people and might end
up causing harm. On a personal level, most of the victims of human trafficking are usually
unable to access excellent healthcare facilities since they do not have proper documentation. As a
result, many die from illnesses that are curable or preventable, such as malaria or severe
dysentery. The legalization of human trafficking would lead to an end to this and as a result,
people would get better health care and a reduction in the risk of spreading dangerous infections
worldwide.

A huge problem associated with human trafficking is the impact that it has on families and the
community at large. In developing nations, it is not new to hear of children being sold just to
ensure the survival of the rest of the family or in developed countries where parents trade their
kids for a quick fix of cocaine or heroin (Giacomo, 2017). In some places, the parents are
deceived to believe that letting their child go is the best so he/she can receive an education and
later a good job in another country. The impact of this depends on the reasons that the family
member left. If the family sold one child for the survival of the rest, they remain in constant fear
that the same may happen to them and most of the time, such families break up, leaving the
remaining children emotionally scarred and leaving them with fear of loss. In situations where
people are trafficked for work, they eventually find themselves working as slaves at jobs that do
not pay and have terrible working conditions, and since they do not have any documents or
money, they are not...
