A disaster refers to an unplanned accident or natural occurrence which results in major
loss of life and damage to property. Most of these disasters usually exceed the ability of the
surrounding community to deal with it thus disrupting the normal functioning of the society.
Disaster can either be caused by natural causes or man-made causes where natural disasters can
either be geophysical, climatological, hydrological or biological (Carter, 2008). Man-made
disasters mostly include environmental degradation, accidents, and pollution which lead to other
adverse effects such as famine and drought. I held an interview with my contact at the local
hospital on disaster preparedness and this essay highlights the feedback that was received.
"What do you consider to be the top three disasters for which you prepare?"
Most of the disasters that occur in our current society are caused by natural causes and
they result in massive loss of life and damage to property. The top three disasters that require
preparedness are; floods, earthquakes, and storms. Floods rank high on the disaster frequency in
the United States. Most general floods are usually easily predictable except in the case of flash
floods. Flash floods are extreme sudden volumes of water that rapidly flow in a given area and
cause impeccable damage to the community as the people are not able to prepare for the floods.
