HannaI found the Occupational Outlook Handbook incredibly interesting and actually found myself getting lost looking at all the different occupations, how much they make, and what exactly they do. I was very intrigued to look into Social workers/Case Workers because my friend just offered me a job with the county to be one. Most social workers only need a Bachelor's degree, but a clinical social worker requires a master’s degree and 2 years of supervised experience, to then go on and be licensed by the state. I know a few people who have gotten a job, and then got their school paid for through work and gained their clinical experience through that. I’m not sure what the case is for the job I am being offered because I do not yet have my Bachelor’s but I think they are in such need of people to work who have knowledge in that field that they can use as many hands as possible. The median pay for social workers is 51,760, which calculates to be about 24.88 an hour. I am quite baffled by this number and realize that it is only a median, but for the amount of work that social workers do, I feel as though this is definitely an underpaid job. 715,600 jobs were available in the year 2020. After the past crazy 18 months we have all experienced, I think it’s safe to say we know why the need for this job is increasing. In all areas of our lives there is an increased need for support because of how detrimental COVID-19 was to all of our livelihoods. We definitely need help recovering and bouncing back from that. In this case, all areas of social workers are becoming more diverse in their therapy to be able to accommodate more needs of the people. The employment of mental health and substance abuse counselors is projected to grow 15 percent from 2020 to 2030, that's faster than any other occupation. I really enjoyed this Handbook and am definitely going to be using it more in the future. I think it's a great tool to have and an interesting read looking into all the different types of jobs out there. Somatic psychotherapists are trained to help clients explore the bodily means by which they conduct their daily lives. Using breath work; movement exercises; touch; and explorations of feeling, sensation, posture, gesture, and expression, clients experience how they shape particular identities and interact with others (USAPB, 2021). Historically, there is evidence that body psychotherapy pre-dates Freud, but most historians give credit to the work of Wilhelm Reich in the 1930s (USAPB, 2021). Body psychotherapy is taught in three different accredited schools, and after obtaining a degree and licensure, one can work in private practice or agency settings. There is an association for body psychology (USAPB) and a peer reviewed journal, the International Body Psychotherapy Journal. Since I am a massage therapist for the last 10 years, I believe I will be able to combine the therapies effectively. Various touch modalities are used, including some I already have training in. Others, like craniosacral therapy or healing touch, that I have training in would integrate well also. The route to a body psychotherapist is like an LPC (licensed professional counselor). A master’s degree is required, and licensure by the state. In South Carolina, I only found 2 therapists on the USAPB website. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (2021), the median wage for a counselor in 2020 was $45,760 and for a massage therapist $43,620. The growth for massage therapy is well above average at 32%, while the growth of counseling is just above the 8% average at 9%. The requirements for licensure in South Carolina are spelled out on the Labor Licensing Regulation Board’s website. Overall, I am excited about the career path that will lead me to body psychotherapy.
