Mcclure initially discusses how much research has changed with the advent of the world wide web, where the trust behind certain sources will fluctuate and change over time, leading to how one may see a source in regards to its reliability.An example of this is how, when wikipedia was initially created, it was seen by school instructors as untrustworthy since it was a platform that allowed for the open participation in the writing process, as declared by Mcclure. Over time, however, the website became more and more trusted as a potential resource. The main reason for this is because more users believe that the “information is trustworthy and useful because, over time, many, many people have contributed their ideas, thoughts, passions, and the facts they learned both in school and in the world." Mcclure suggests that the habit of relying on online search engines and resources is a habit that has been solidified in the younger generations, in generations that have grown up as the internet became more and more used by the general public. He cites some researchers from the University College of London, who state that younger individuals often relied on google for starting a research project. Moreover, they also state that they have the idea that they can "get by with google." I find this idea to be quite accurate based on my own behaviors as well as what I have seen from other people. I never once went to the library here on campus when working on a research paper, as I thought that using sources such as google scholar would just be sufficient. After reading Mcclure's piece, I have learned that it is not wise to rely on internet only sources, as library archives and other physical resources will be useful in not only providing me with the information I am seeking, but also helping me to become more adept at researching in the process.Q: How exactly can be start encouraging younger generations to not just rely on google and other search engines when conducting research?2.I read McClure’s article “Googlepedia: Turning Information Behaviors into Research Skills”. McClure encouraged using Google and Wikipedia as an initial tendency for pre-research and our research process should end in the school library. Prior to reading this article, my teacher from high school writing class criticized and has prohibited us from ever using Wikipedia to find research sources because he believes Wikipedia is not reliable since anyone from anywhere at any time could modify the web page regardless of the accuracy. But Wikipedia and Google are perfect sources for getting a bigger picture of the topic and could provide me with quality keywords as my search terms. My research process is nearly identical to McClure’s recommended eight steps research process and I found the CRAAP test is extremely helpful to examine a source’s usability. One thing that I usually do is use bibliography software to cite the source first and write myself a demo under each source to tell them apart. I also use the same technique that McClure suggests his students use which he calls “give props”. By stating out the author’s name, background, and one’s relationship to the topic in our text, we are able to show the source’s credibility and also our credibility as a writer to our audience in a clear and easy way. My research topic is the relationship between family income level and academic achievement. I would like to find out how the family income level affects academic achievement. I use impact, social-economic background, and academic achievements as my searching terms. I first browsed Google with terms “factors affect academic achievements” and I read several scholarly articles regarding this topic. Through the readings, I discovered that “the learning environment”, “parents' habits and involvement”, “family instability and issues” made appearances with such high frequency in all the articles. I then seized the characteristics these terms share in common, and conclude them to be family background or more formally social-economic background/status. Since I had a broad sense of my research topic, I finalized my research question to a clear, focused, concise, and arguable question. Then I use my finalized research question as my search terms to find academic sources using the UC Davis Library database.My question is: Do you also use the eight steps that McClure recommended in the article as your research process?
