Introduction
Communication plays a vital role in human interaction. Whether in societal contexts,
professional settings, or personal relationships, effective communication remains essential in
fostering understanding, building relationships, and conveying ideas. There is a list of theories
behind the art of communication. These theories are meant to provide a better understanding of
communication and its intricacies. Communication theories are both important and interesting.
They play a valuable role in understanding people. This paper will focus on an analysis of the
film Coach Carter. The analysis will explore how the film's characters communicate and behave
using two communication theories, i.e., expectancy violations theory and social penetration
theory. Throughout this film, expectancy violations theory and social penetration theory emerged
as two consistently relevant theories worth analyzing. In this paper, I will also summarize my
thoughts on those two theories.
Analysis 1: Social penetration theory
The social penetration theory is attributed to Erwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor. They
developed this theory in 1973. The objective behind this theory's development was to get a better
understanding of the way relationships between people develop and progress (West & Turner,
2010). According to this theory, communication in a relationship starts superficially and builds
more intimacy as time goes on. The theory is based on the penetration process, which has four
phases. These four phases are orientation, exploratory affective exchange, affective exchange,
and stable exchange.
According to the film, Coach Carter was a former student at Richmond High School. It
was at this school that he got an opportunity to become a head coach. By the time Carter started

his job at the school, a significant number of students on the basketball team were facing
academic challenges. More precisely, these students were struggling. Coach Carter saw the need
to increase accountability in the group. He introduced immediate boundaries and structure for his
players. This action by Carter had a drastic impact. For example, some of the players left the
basketball team, but some stayed behind. Those who remained had no option but to adjust to this
new relationship. When the coach's relationship with the basketball team began, there was
