Is Google Making Us Stupid?

No unread replies.No replies.

Has the Internet helped today’s students? Nicholas Carr is not so sure, and has concerns about our reliance on digital databases to learn new information. But Jamais Cascio says Google provides a pathway to information, and we are smarter because of it. Both have investigated the role Google plays in our own levels of information retention, and what consuming info in small bits does to our understanding of facts, stories, and the world.

Please note: It is common today for “Google” to be used as a catch-all term (as well as a verb!) that refers to all digitized databases and search engines in general.

For this assignment, you’ll need to read and reference two articles:

Is Google Making Us Stupid? Download Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr in The Atlantic.

Get Smarter Download Get Smarter” by Jamais Cascio in The Atlantic.

Please answer both questions 1 and 2.

Which article do you find more convincing? Is the Internet helpful, or is it making us “stupid”? In what ways is Google (or just digital databases in general) impacting your own ability to absorb large amount of information? What about your attention span? Respond to these questions using concepts from the readings. Do not quote lines or phrases directly from the readings. You must paraphrase in your own words.

Look up any recent survey on the trends related to internet usage in the U.S. You may look up surveys done by Pew Research Center, Gallup, or various universities (Examples of search keywords include “internet usage statistics + Pew,” “US adults internet use,” etc). In the last paragraph of your writeup, briefly summarize one or two of the most interesting statistics from the survey you chose. Briefly explain why these numbers seemed interesting to you.

Is Google Making Us Stupid?
Answer 1

The impacts of digital databases and the internet on our cognitive abilities are very
complex and different, and this debate emphasizes their effects and results. In Nicholas Carr's
"Is Google Making Us Stupid?" (Carr, 2008), a very thrilling dispute on the possible adverse
implications of our rising dependence on the internet and how it can recondition our brains in
ways that reduce our capabilities to focus and take part in profound, supported thinking is
expressed. Conversely, Jamais Cascio's "Get Smarter" (2008) offers a more hopeful
viewpoint, recommending that the web and computerized devices improve our insight and
give us phenomenal access to information.

Carr's major focus is on the internet, where its consistent transmission of information
and interruptions molds our brains to quickly adapt knowledge, making it progressively
challenging to zero in ...

Goes above and beyond expectations!
