Health Professions Education EDUC 201 Yousef Ali Alotaibi 36-1-1-1-0049 Pre-Pharma Group A Assignment 3: Literature Search Bipolar disorder May 27, 2017 For the purposes of this literature search, I have searched the internet to find website that are reliable and can be used as a resource. My research will focus on the bipolar disorder in children. In addition to how they can treat it. This research will provide a general information of bipolar disorder. Then, bipolar disorder in children and teen, and finally how it can be treated. Firstly, bipolar disorder can be defined as a brain disorder that causes unusual clear changes in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Bipolar disorder has another name which is manicdepressive illness. Bipolar disorder types involve shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels, and may differ in the duration of the episodes. It can be divided into four basic types, which is Bipolar disorder I, bipolar disorder II, Cyclothymic Disorder (also known as cyclothymia), and Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorders. Secondly, bipolar disorder commonly develops in older teenagers and young adults. Although, it can develop in children as young as six. Some experts think it is rare and being over diagnosed; others believe it is the opposite. Currently, it is hard say how common it is. So, it is important not to jump to any conclusion, if your child is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and Make sure you are comfortable with your child's health care provider. Diagnosing bipolar disorder in young children is difficult, because many of the symptoms are similar to those of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or conduct disorders or even just normal child behavior. Therefore, it is dangerous to jump to conclusions, because the medications that are used for ADHD are often stimulants of bipolar disorder, which can potentially trigger mania in children with bipolar disorder. In manic phase, young children might be more irritable than adults. They might complain of physical symptoms, and that more likely to occur during depressive episode. Finally, treatment helps many people to control their mood shifts and other bipolar symptoms better. An effective treatment plan usually includes a combination of medication and 'talk therapy'. There are different types of medications that can help in controlling symptoms of bipolar disorder. Each person has different medications that work best with him. Medications that are generally used to treat bipolar disorder include: mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics, and antidepressants. In conclusion, before taking any medication you should talk to a doctor or a pharmacist to understand the risks and benefits of the medication. there are a lot things that you can do to keep your child well as the parent of a child with bipolar disorder. For example, talk to your child's teachers, because he might need special allowances at school References: 1. NIMH » Bipolar Disorder [Internet]. Nimh.nih.gov. 2017 [cited 27 May 2017].
