Will an “America First” Trade Policy Make America Great Again?
President Donald Trump vowed to do away with trade deals which he deemed unfair to
the United States in the quest of enforcing the “America First” trade policy. The policy has those
who support it as well a good number of critics. First, it is worth noting some factors to be
considered when it comes to trade. It is people who engage in trade and not countries. Also, for
trade to be a successful endeavour, all parties need to reap the best and not a win-lose situation. It
is also important to remember that trade deficits are not bad (a situation where a country has
more imports than exports). Cheap imports are beneficial to the American economy particularly
the low-income consumers. Protectionism measures are always unfavourable to a country.
