Radiological imaging may be necessary for diagnosis, depending on the situation. Among women in the United States, breast cancer is the second most common cancer after skin cancer. Black women are at a higher risk of breast cancer and face a higher mortality rate (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). As providers, it is imperative to feel confident about taking the necessary steps when breast cancer is suspected. The assessment should include a thorough history, physical examination, and an assessment of the risk factors associated with this condition. The program also includes early detection of patients' mortality and interventions to reduce it. As part of the American College of Radiology's (n.d.) comprehensive evidence-based data review to determine the most appropriate imaging intervention, the College evaluated evidence-based care and risk levels (average, intermittent, and high).

  • In primary care settings, it is critical to assess the risks associated with screening for breast cancer to determine the appropriate course of treatment. Additionally, the CDC (2023) explains that false positive results may result when doctors see something that looks like cancer but is not. There are several risks associated with this, including increased cost, invasiveness, time, and anxiety. Diagnostic tests and referrals to specialists are the most common methods providers use to assess breast cancer risk. Sound waves (sonograms) are used to collect pictures of areas within the breast using breast ultrasound, a less invasive and cost-effective method of collecting these images. An X-ray that demonstrates more detail is known as a diagnostic mammogram, which is usually ordered when further evaluation is indicated. The American College of Radiology [ACR], n.d.) recommends and recommends MRI for the diagnosis of breast cancer in high-risk patients.
