What are two advantages that incumbents have when seeking reelection? Why are these
advantages?
Incumbents usually enjoy different advantages when seeking reelection compared to
other candidates. According to Baker (2012), its due to such advantages that has seen over 80%
of incumbents elected in every single congressional election. One of the advantages that
incumbents enjoy compared to other candidates is the name recognition. Compared to other
candidates, incumbents enjoy familiarity with voters. Other than this, their roles as elected
leaders confer some advantage to them. By being in leadership positions, incumbents are able to
influence voters even before the election compared to other leaders. Years before the actual
election, incumbents are able to use their positions to popularize their candidature. Having
organized campaigns in the past, incumbents are able to organize and coordinate their campaigns
better compared to fresh candidates.
