Femicide is defined is a sex-driven hate crime that involves men (or women) deliberately
killing women and girls for the mere fact that they are female. In contrast with homicide which
mainly happens out in the streets, femicide is more prevalent in homes. Since the 1900s, millions
of women have become victims of femicide right from the comfort of their homes. In the poem,
the woman is brutally murdered by her own husband as she lays in bed asleep. The lines “His
heart was closed” depict the callousness of the husband who despite having married this woman
and started a family, he goes ahead to butcher her.
Unfortunately, this barbaric practice which is essentially a crime against humanity has
not let up. Soaring rates of femicide in Spain have sparked outrage and citizens are demanding
action from the government. The recent murder of Ana Gomez in Spain, a woman who had
sought a divorce from her husband, took place in front of the Gomez’s teen children from a
previous relationship. It appears that slaying women are taken so lightly that men unabashedly
commit this crime even if there are suspects who can inform authorities. 2016 had the highest
