Guide Sheet for Sociology of Religion Paper As indicated in your syllabus, there is one paper required for the course. Topic(s): This paper should be should address a specific topic covered in the class, and it should run approximately 6-8 pages in length. It may take a variety of formats: ➢ a “visit to services” (per the instructions on pages 40-42 of the text) ➢ A three item literature review on a selected topic within the purview of the course ➢ An analysis of a specific religious belief in terms of a sociological process or concept (for example: interaction between politics and ethnicity in a given circumstance; or the analysis of a specific belief or practice in the light of the social world in which it was constructed); or last, ➢ The review of a specific novel that has strong religious overtones (e.g., Cutting for Stone) and which you can document from your course study. Topic: how people socialize with each other using religion. How religion brings people together and creates communities. Make the case!! and be sure to distinguish "socializing" (as spending time together etc.) from socialization as preparing a person to be a member of the community. OR...show how the one might facilitate the other but do be specific in terms of time commitments, etc. Due Date: MAY 2, 2017 Formatting—Use MS WORD: Your paper should be written in MS WORD (or “Rich Text Format” if you do not have WORD). Formatting—Margins and Spacing: By way of margins “one inch” margins all around will be fine and the paper should be double spaced. Grading: Your paper will be graded in terms of both substance AND form. By way of “form,” this means proper formatting as well as a good final proofing to catch all spelling and grammatical errors so you don’t lose any points for such things. By way of substance I expect that you will draw upon concepts learned in the course and that—in a literature review, for example, you both summarize the individual articles AND synthesize their overlapping and distinctive elements. Similarly, if you analyze a specific belief or a religious grounded novel, be sure to indicate its varying dimensions as they relate to the believer(s) (e.g., the cultural/symbolic and membership dimensions as identified by Roberts and Yamane) and the milieu(x) within which the belief or story is located. Again, similarly, if you follow the guidelines for the religious visit option, you will be graded on the extent to which you adequately meet those guidelines. (But see the subsequent “Additional Tips” for the religious visit option below). Additional Tips for Choosing Your Religious Event/Visit (Topic) 1. Pick a religion, religious event or religious congregation, or community that is new and unfamiliar to you. 2. The event or service should be something you can handle in terms of time. A service that is one to three hours in length should be enough time to use for this assignment. 3. It should be a setting where you have a right to be present, either because you have been invited, or the event is open to the public, or you have paid an admittance fee. The contact step (a step not mentioned in the textbook’s guidelines) will ensure whether or not you have a right to be present at the event, service or church. Make sure that you are respectful of the rules and practices of the religion and of the religious community. 4. If you are unable to physically attend another religious event (due to work, family or personal reasons), please contact me for alternative way to complete this assignment. You must obtain permission from instructor to proceed with the alternative project. Good luck. This paper—whichever type you choose—should enrich your own thinking and demonstrate your ability to apply sociological concepts to “religion” with clarity, respect, with empathy, and ideally it should be a real highlight of the course.

Religion of Sociology
Introduction

When trying to understand the religion of sociology and how people come together
through dutiful practices, it is crucial for us to ask ourselves some questions. The first question
should aim at giving an answer to how people get to believe, act, conduct, behave and feel the
same things about a given religious affiliation or identity. Why do they strongly clinch on what
they believe in without a sign of ever believing in something different? It is also important to ask
ourselves questions about why people seem to be opposed but respectful to the beliefs of other
religious societies? While there exist various studies on this topic, the most apparent and
explanatory study which emerges to answer these and other questions is the study of religious
socialization, notes Cornwell (1988). In this study, the questions which seem to resurface is why
people in a society as religious and spiritually oriented. Additionally, the study of religious
socialization seeks to answer the question of why people should be as religious as they are.
Arguably, religion is one of the oldest societies in the history of the world , contests
Kelleyand De Graaf, 1997). With many sociologists and philosophers arguing that religion had
lost its significance in the community over the last century, it is crucial to note that religion is
still an active body which brings people together for spiritual fulfillment and sociological
reasons. Apparently, the importance and significance of a society in the contemporary society
cannot be overlooked. Religion in the current generation is more rejuvenated and active with the
members having high expectations from its existence. This paper seeks to elucidate on how
people socialize with each other using religion. In other words, the article will attempt to answer
how religion brings people together and creates communities using the available theories and

based on the findings from the research.
Definition of Religion and Sociology
In an endeavor to understand how religion manages to bring people together, it is prudent
for us to understand the meaning of religion and sociology as two distinct elements in society but
which interrelate and interconnect to form strong social bonds. Different researchers and tru...
