As is often the case, hard work is rewarded with more work and responsibility. The director has asked you to work with the other supervising counselors to prepare a presentation to present to the entire agency dealing with client rights. In this presentation, you are to discuss each of the client rights in detail, and provide examples that illustrate the importance of ensuring that client rights are protected.

Your presentation should cover the following:

1. Right to confidentiality
 There are usually three instances when it’s a counselors legal

responsibility to break confidentiality and report to the authorities
➢ When child abuse is suspected
➢ When elder abuse is brought to his attention

➢ If someone’s life is in immediate danger or under threat.
➢ Clients are informed of this before they start treatment.

An example of confidentiality violation ; when a counselor discusses the clients medical condition with his
family without the clients consent.



Repercussion



When this happens the counselor may lose his license as a counselor and maybe sued by the patient for
emotional or financial damage.



This kind of violation will have emotional effect on the patient because of the stigma he will experience
from one or all his family members.



He will also lose the trust with his counselor which means he will probably not seek further treatment.



The agency will be forced to terminate the contract with the counselor and report him to the proper authority.

2. The right to be treated with
dignity.
 It is easy play the role of protector and forget to treat the patient with dignity. Unless

the client is experiencing cognitive failure, he still makes decisions about his life
and they should be respected.
 His privacy either physical or emotional should be resected.
 An example of a violation: when a counselor leaves the door open while with the

client or opens the door without knocking.
 Repercussions: this may lead the client leaving the counselor and seeking treatment

from another counselor or not altogether.

The right to be treated with dignity.
 Damages: This kind of violation will make the client lose faith

in his counselor or the profession altogether and may probably
never seek treatment again.
 Steps: The agency should remind the counselors of the clients

rights to be treated with dignity and that they should follow the
rules.

3. The right to be informed of all
your rights and responsibilities
 The counselor or and the agency has the right to inform you of your rights and responsibilities

while under their care.
 This means that you as a client must follow the rules and the counselor must follow the code of

conduct.
 An example: the agency or the counselor may not inform you of your rights and end up

denying you those rights.
 Repercussions: if the client finds out that he was not informed of his rights and the agency or

the counselor violated the said rights, the you have the right to sue them for damages.
