The ladder of inference was founded by a psychologist who engaged in matters of
organizational management called Chris Argyris. The theory was then put into wide practice by
Peter Senge in his book the ‘Fifth Discipline’ which primarily focused on the issues, practice and
art of learning in an organizational environment.
The ladder of inference is a theory which when put into practice educates us on the
processes of thinking. It imparts individuals in not only management and organizational sectors
of companies but also the general populace who make decisions concerning various issues in
life, on how to think. It teaches simply, giving a lot of thought into your own processes of
thinking before coming up with a substantive conclusion from whence an action will follow.
In this modern age we are living in a world that is moving very fast. Decisions are
required to be made quickly, and, most often than not, this decisions are not examined. This
decisions affect other people differently and in worse circumstances lead to conflicts that would
otherwise be avoided if the right mechanisms of critical thinking are put into effective use.
