Use WWI to Illustrate the Balance of Power
Introduction
In international relations, the balance of power refers to the position and policy of a
country or group of countries defending itself against another country or group of countries by
balancing its power against the power of the other countries. It’s the balance among nations or
alliances to stop an entity from becoming too powerful and, hence, gaining the capacity to
impose its drive upon the rest. Typically, the concept of balance of power is a common element
if political realism, where the aspect of self-preservation is a key guiding value. It usually results
in countries forming alliances with others because of convenience as opposed to shared
principles and beliefs. During periods of war and conflicts, nations utilize the concept of balance
of power no prevent incentives for war (Fromkin, 2005). This paper will use WWI to illustrate
the concept of balance of power.
World War 1
World War 1(WWI) was a worldwide war that began in Europe and lasted for four years.
WWI started in 1914 after Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated and ended in 1918 and
claimed a significant number of lives. During the war, the Ottoman Empire, Hungary, Austria,
Germany, and Bulgaria (the central powers) fought against France, Great Britain, the United
States, Italy, and Russia (the allied powers). Military technologies, as well as the fears of trench
conflict, are accredited for the destruction of WWI. The war attracted great economic powers of
the world, gathered in two opposing alliances. By the end of WWI, over 15 million people
including civilians and soldiers had lost their lives (Fromkin, 2005).
