Introduction
Dementia refers to a general term that is used to describe a decline in the mental ability of an
individual in a severe way thus interfering with the daily functioning. The most common forms
of the condition comprise of Alzheimer’s disease which accounts for 60-80% of the cases and
vascular dementia which may occur after a striking diseases such as stroke among many more.
All these types of dementia have special common characteristics and differences in the way in
these conditions occur.

Alzheimer’s disease and Vascular Dementia
Prevalence
Alzheimer’s disease: 60-80% while Vascular is 15-20%
Causes
Alzheimer’s disease does not have any specific cause but believed to originate from genetic and
environmental factors. On the other hand, vascular originates from stroke and high blood
pressure.
Risk factors
Alzheimer’s disease comprise of age, hereditary (genetics) as well as the general health of the
patient. Vascular dementia is associated with high blood pressure, coronary heart disease as well
as diabetes
Symptoms of the Diseases
Vascular disease portrays itself as a sudden decline in the brain functioning as a result of stroke.
Alzheimer’s disease the memory may gradually declines over time
Diagnosis
Both uses tests aim to evaluate communication, memory and the general cognitive ability of the
patient, Along with the above tests, Magnetic Radiation Imaging (MRI).
Management of the Conditions
Both uses medication and natural approaches.
