GIS for Transportation Planning
A geographic information system (GIS) is any system that generates, analyzes, integrates,
stores, and shares information spatial of geographic data. Such systems have transformed the
way data is handled by storing large amounts of data and customizing the presentation of such
data in cartographic outputs. These outputs also allowed customized applications of the data in
different fields. Among the most used applications of GIS is transportation which has received a
lot of attention due to the traffic that comes with inland transportation and cargo handling at
terminals. The use of GIS, therefore, has proved promising to solve problems of transportation
and thus make the systems more efficient and even safer for road users to effectively travel,
transport their goods, and manage projects effectively.
The information systems for transportation are crucial because many projects extensively
rely on transportation for their success. Therefore, providing such a system allows information
and data to be handled efficiently in increasing the efficiency of the transportation systems and
the projects as well. According to France-Mensah et al. (2017), while reliable, updated, and
relevant information does not guarantee better decision-making, it is necessary for such.
Therefore, the demand for information requires efficient information systems that can effectively
identify, collect, store, analyze, and present the information for application in decision-making
for effective transportation systems. GIS expert systems and database management systems,
therefore, present an opportunity to make effective and efficient use of the data in making
decisions regarding transportation and logistics.
