The increase in the aging population causes different challenges such as the provision of
patient-centered healthcare services to the elderly population. According to various researchers,
the older people require long-term care and a continuous assessment of their bio-psychosocial

needs for prevention of adverse healthcare outcomes (Gutierrez et al., 2014). Diet is an important
aspect when dealing with the geriatric assessment. The study attributes different factors to the
increased vulnerability of the aging population to inadequate nutrition compared to the general
population. Some of the reasons may include reduced appetite caused by loneliness, depression
or drugs that suppress appetite, the prevalence of medical conditions such as constipation,
inadequate finances, and inabilities to prepare food due to physical challenges among others
(Wieland & Hirth, 2003).
Moreover, they are at a higher risk of becoming obese due to the increased inactivity and
the low socioeconomic status that reduces access to organic and variety of food. The geriatric
practitioner should thus perform a complete nutrition evaluation to determine any change in the
functional status of the elderly population. In many circumstances, nutritionists attribute such
changes to the dietary intake nutritional requirements. Some of the components of a nutritional
assessment may include the current BMI to evaluate obesity and previous changes in the weight.
Also, the impact of current medication in the nutrition level of an individual and the functional
status that measures both the ability of the patient to afford and prepare the food and mental
status that helps in determination of the interest of the patient in food. Furthermore, it should

state the group of food intake for determination of the adequacy of diet. Lastly, the assessment
should give an insight on the vitamin or mineral supplementation.
