The era of caliphs emerged after Muhammad died in 632 CE which prompted the Muslim
community to elect leaders who were known as Caliphs, which is a word that meant a
‘successor’. One of the similarities among the four Caliphs, who came after Muhammad, was
the fact that they all vowed to act in accordance to the Quran and Muhammad’s message. All the
Caliphs used the Shariah law in the governance of the empire. For instance, the use of Jihad as a
tool to control and expand Muslim empire was common among the different Caliphs (Kennedy,
2015).
Umayyad dynasty was the first dynasty to rule over the empire of the caliphate. People of
the Umayyad dynasty were headed by Abū Sufyān and they were majorly composed of the
