Description

You will be examining one supporting character (any character except Walter) A Raisin in the Sun and writing an argument about that character. Specifically, you will want to address these questions: What is the character’s role in the play? How would the play be different without that character? In thinking about these questions, you may want to look deeply into that character and think about ways in which he or she is not as simple as one might imagine.

Essay 3: What Would I do Without You?: Examining Supporting Characters in Drama Length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12 plus a Works Cited page. To defend the argument with appropriate examples. To integrate chosen evidence with sufficient context and analysis. To organize the essay in a logical way that progresses predictably from one idea to the next. To use clear and precise language to communicate ideas effectively. To demonstrate proper use of MLA citation and style. Critical Thinking Objectives: Engaging in active reading. Knowing and identifying elements of drama. Collecting suitable evidence. Presenting argument and evidence in logical way. Introduction: Plays are often billed by recruiting a prominent star to play the central role. While many actors would kill to play Walter, focusing just on this character obscures the important roles in the supporting cast. For this assignment, you will look at one of the supporting characters and think about the important role they fill in the play. Task: You will be examining one supporting character (any character except Nora or Walter) from A Doll’s House or A Raisin in the Sun and writing an argument about that character. Specifically, you will want to address these questions: What is the character’s role in the play? How would the play be different without that character? In thinking about these questions, you may want to look deeply into that character and think about ways in which he or she is not as simple as one might imagine. In doing this analysis, you should pay special attention to the following elements: • Language. Dialogue is obviously the most important element of a play, and thinking about how a character speaks can reveal a lot about him or her. • Behavior. A play’s plot is moved forward by the actions of the characters. Look to how characters behave to get a better sense of why they do what they do. • Background. A character’s history also helps in explaining their actions, so be sure to pay attention to what we know about a character. Pay attention to subtle clues in dialog. • Interaction with other characters. We can infer a lot about a character based on how he or she interacts with other character in the play. • Reaction to his or her environment. Plays often put characters under stress, and one great way to do that is to put them in a challenging environment. Be sure to examine how characters react to their environment to get a better sense of them. Evidence Requirements: You should NOT consult any outside materials (e.g., websites, books, or articles that analyze or discuss the play) to help you analyze your chosen play. You should cite the play in your paper and on your Works Cited page according to MLA standards. You can use any material from our textbook too, but that must be cited as well. As always, any student found to plagiarize on this or any assignment will receive a grade of ZERO.
