Quality is an important issue of concern for all healthcare providers, payers, patients and
policy makers. When the quality of patient care decreases, it essentially means that the outcomes
of healthcare services are not desirable or they are not consistent with the existing professional
knowledge. Trinity Health is one of the largest healthcare organizations in the state of Michigan,
United States. Recently, the organization has been plagued with issues of quality as it relates to
patient care. As a quality officer, it is imperative to come up with measures that can help the
organization to enhance the quality of care it delivers to its patients. This paper seeks to highlight
the quality initiatives for Trinity Health, identify factors that can help to reduce healthcare costs
while maintaining quality of care, contrast between quality in a free-market system and quality in
a single-payer system. The paper will further explore the common quality law initiatives that still
exist in modern healthcare organizations, argue for the importance of healthcare quality in
Trinity Health and formulate a plan for protecting patient information that is in line with all the
legal requirements.
Quality Initiatives for Trinity Health
The three quality initiatives that will be pursued by the Trinity Health include enhanced
patient flow, zero errors and reduced readmission rates. In essence, measures of quality in any
given healthcare organization are based on the parameters of effectiveness, safety, timeliness,
patient-centeredness, equity, and efficiency as it relates to delivering care and the outcomes of
respective services delivered. Therefore, enhanced patient flow is one initiative that will to help
the organization to increase quality of care. As it is, Trinity Health suffers from overcrowding
and frequent delays especially in emergency departments, laboratories, and in the intensive care
units. Enhancing the flow of patients in the aforementioned areas and other areas on hospital

floor will be the first step to ensuring smooth handling of patients in and out of the hospital in a
timely and effective manner. Enhancing patient flow will further help to ensure proper
management of patient visits and prevent overcrowding as well as wide variations in occupancy
rates. This will help to reduce patient surges, eliminate delays and enhance physician-patient
interaction, which in turn, will improve health outcomes of patients (Sadeghi, 2013).
The second quality initiative will focus on ensuring zero errors in clinical outcomes.
